What is a Brazilian Mastiff?
The Brazilian Mastiff is a large molossoid breed developed in colonial Brazil. Internationally it is registered with the FCI as Fila Brasileiro; in Spanish-speaking countries it is also known as Fila Brasilero. All three names refer to the same breed.

History and origin
The Brazilian Mastiff descends from Iberian mastiffs, old bulldogs and bloodhounds brought to Brazil by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. On large plantations the dogs guarded cattle and tracked jaguars. The name "Fila" comes from the Portuguese verb filar, meaning "to hold" or "to grip".

Temperament — the famous ojeriza
The Brazilian Mastiff is famous for its extreme loyalty: there is even a Brazilian saying, "as faithful as a Fila". The breed displays ojeriza, an innate distrust of strangers that makes it an exceptional guardian. With its family the Fila is calm, affectionate and protective, especially with children.
Care and training
The breed needs early socialization, a confident handler and plenty of space. It is not recommended for first-time dog owners. Daily exercise, a high-quality diet and yearly checks for hip and elbow dysplasia are essential.
